What is the Recreation Master Plan?

The County of Grande Prairie and the City of Grande Prairie have collaborated on a Joint Recreation Master Plan.

After an extensive process the Joint Recreation Master Plan is now complete. The plan will serve as a framework for cooperation and a guidepost for the planning and development of recreation opportunities involving municipalities throughout the region.

Some of the municipalities included in this initiative include the towns of Beaverlodge, Sexsmith, and Wembley; the Village of Hythe; and the hamlets of Bezanson, Clairmont, La Glace, Teepee Creek, and Valhalla Centre; and the MD of Greenview.

Where are we today?

The County of Grande Prairie and the City of Grande Prairie Councils adopted the area’s Joint Recreation Master Plan at separate Council Meetings on October 17, 2016.

With adoption secured, a committee will be created to provide guidance on recreation service delivery through the implementation of the Master Plan. The Councils will jointly invite the Towns of Beaverlodge, Sexsmith and Wembley, the Village of Hythe, and the MD of Greenview – as well as larger stakeholder groups within the communities to be a part of the committee.

Community Engagement

An extensive amount of community consultation was conducted in the fall of 2015 including;

  • Household Surveys (10,734)
  • Online Surveys
  • Student Surveys
  • Community Group Surveys

Over fifty community group and individual interviews were also conducted. Citizens received a final review of the findings both online and at open houses.
